Up close and personal with a Water Dragon

Last week we saw this large male Water Dragon on the nightwalk. He is a regular this time of the year. Water Dragons are normally very skittish, but soon become habituated to people, as long as they aren't handled or otherwise alarmed.

The people pictured photgraphing this one had just walked under the vine he is sitting on!

Male Water Dragons are significantly larger than females, and form harems of several females. Water Dragons are accomplished swimmers, using their large tail to propel themselves through the water. Even their nostrils ore on top of the nose, allowing easier breathing when in water.
